Emily Ratajkowski is opening up about her pregnancy – as well as her reaction when people ask her if she wants a boy or a girl.

Writing for Vogue in an article published Monday, the model, 29, revealed that she and her husband, actor and producer Sebastian Bear-McClard are expecting their first child.

Ini the piece, Ratajkowski opens up about why she and her husband decline to answer questions about their child’s gender.

“We like to respond that we won’t know the gender until our child is 18 and that they’ll let us know then,” she writes. “Everyone laughs at this. There is a truth to our line, though, one that hints at possibilities that are much more complex than whatever genitalia our child might be born with: the truth that we ultimately have no idea who – rather than what – is growing inside my belly.”

The model adds that she hopes to raise her child with as few gender stereotypes as possible.

“But no matter how progressive I may hope to be, I understand the desire to know the gender of our fetus,” she continues. “It feels like the first real opportunity to glimpse who they might be.”

Though Ratajkowski says her child’s gender is not important to her, she admits that, in the past, she “almost automatically imagined” herself having a daughter. But the model says raising a girl comes with a unique set of challenges, noting her own body image struggles growing up.

“I still fight subconscious and internalized misogyny on a regular basis, catching myself as I measure the width of my hips against another woman’s,” she writes. “Who is to say I’d be able to protect my daughter from it?”
